A bit of a deviation from my other work for VLY GRL, "Dear Grief" is an illustrated letter to my grief. In June 2019, my dad was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Three months later, after several sessions of radiation and chemotherapy, he passed away at the age of 70. No one in our family was prepared for this trauma, and I am still processing it after being almost immediately flung into a global pandemic now going on year three.
In 2021, during a POC virtual grief workshop with grief guides Mangda Sengvanhpheng of BACII and Naomi Edmondson of The Glorious Hum, participants were invited to write a letter to our grief. I was surprised by what I wrote, and felt compelled to share it in case it will make anyone feel less alone in their journey with grief.
I hope this letter resonates with you and encourages you to think about your own relationship with your grief, and possibly look at it as an ally rather than an adversary.
